We hope they are as fun to play as they were to design.

With a total of 9 campaigns and 58 scenarios, the expanded Age of Kings should offer hours of challenging gameplay. Players will have the benefits of new features such as smart villagers, new units such as the Halberdier and Petard, in addition to the revised difficulty system. In addition to these campaigns, it is also possible to play any of the original AOK campaigns in the Conquerors Expansion.

It is here where the Hun penchant for Wonder busting can really come into play. The Huns invade Gaul (France) in the dead of winter, engage in a titanic battle on the legendary Catalaunian Fields, and finally ride down into the Italian peninsula. The second half of the campaign is Attila's invasion of the Western Roman Empire. Attila demands protection money from the Romans, and starts burning towns until he gets it. The next two scenarios involve Attila's confrontation with the Eastern Roman Empire (which would later be known as the Byzantines). With Bleda out of the way, Attila can choose whether to ally with or attack the surrounding Scythians, Romans and Persians. Outright murder is one solution, but there are sneakier opportunities as well. In the beginning of the campaign, Attila is not yet king of the Huns and must claim rulership from his incompetent brother, Bleda. The backdrops are our first outdoor scenes, complete with tree stumps as waving grasses. The story is told from the point of view of a European veteran of these battles, now an aging priest in France. Our campaign begins with the Huns invading the area around the Danube River, making some initial threats at Constantinople, and finally plunging into Gaul and then into Italy itself. He wanted desperately to be taken seriously as a powerful ruler, and knew that to accomplish the goal, he needed to impress the biggest kid on the block: the Roman Empire. Attila had high aspirations for a barbarian. The most famous of these were the Huns, and if you know only one name from that time period, you have probably heard of Attila. Rome was already waning when horde after horde of barbarian raiders started pouring out of the forests of Europe and the steppes of Asia. In some cases the differences in a scenario played on the easiest and most difficult settings are so extreme that it is almost worth playing the scenario both ways to see all the differences. The new difficulty level system in the Conquerors Expansion will ensure that casual gamers can finish any scenario in an hour or so, while hardcore fans should face some pretty titanic struggles. I particularly want to mention difficulty level, because we came to the conclusion that the AOK campaigns were probably too hard for many players. We have learned a lot about storytelling, using triggers and difficulty level. I think that players will find all four campaigns to be better than those in Age of Kings. Thus, we have the Battles of the Conquerors-eight scenarios spotlighting battles such as Agincourt, Lepanto and Manzikert. As a fourth campaign, we brought to light an idea that had been kicking around since AOK: what to do with all those famous battles that were important in history, but not robust enough to support an entire campaign. In the end, we came up with three great names: Montezuma of the Aztecs, El Cid of the Spanish, and Attila the Hun.

As we whittled this list down, we focused on those conflicts that would best show off the new civilizations, and which conquerors players would most want to portray. We kicked off the Age of Kings expansion pack with a long list of famous conquerors, all of whom could support great campaigns. It certainly looks impressive so far and as soon as we can dive into the preview copy we've received, we'll be able to give you our first impressions.Ĭampaigns In Age Of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion The fourth campaign is a collection of individual battles from the medieval period. Montezuma's up next driving the Spanish from Tenochtitlan. Next week we'll cover El Cid's defense of Spain. We'll start off with the Attila the Hun campaign which sees the player taking command of the Huns to invade Europe.

Over the next four weeks, he'll feature a different one of the campaigns. The features are authored by Ensemble Studios Game Designer Greg Street. Well, we managed to weasel an overview of each of the expansion's four campaigns. "Where's the AOE2 Expansion preview?" "When are you going to do the preview?" "Why haven't you done a preview already?" For a solid month now we've been fielding questions from fans of Age of Empires II: Age of Kings.
